What is Thai Bodywork?
Thai bodywork was thought to have originated around 500 B.C. from Jivaka Kumar Bhacca, an Indian doctor who is believed to have been the personal physician of the Buddha. Dr. Jivaka’s medical training was informed by India’s Ayurvedic system, the same system from which the yoga tradition developed. This is why many Thai Massage moves are so similar to hatha yoga postures (asanas). Thai Massage also employs a theory of energy lines similar to the yogic concept of nadis. Both systems consist of approximately 72,000 lines. In Thai, they are referred to as Sen lines. Although different, these lines can also be compared to the meridian lines in the Chinese system of healing. All three cultures believe that energy flows through the body in pathways, which directly affects the health & integrity of our total being.
Yogic theory claims that energy lines make up our energy bodies from which the physical body manifests. Also, it is believed that there is an invisible life force (Prana), which travels these lines and sustains our health. This life force is derived from the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and even our thoughts and actions. It is when these lines get blocked and the energy cannot flow freely that pain and dis-ease appear. The Thai theory for healing is to open up these lines through proper stretching and massage techniques in order to restore the flowing current. This is done by treating the entire body as a whole, knowing that there are energy currents throughout, and that to touch anywhere with positive intention affects the entire system. When the body is open, flexible and activated, true health radiates and joy permeates!
What to expect:
A session with Maya incorporates Thai Bodywork massage with Sound Therapy. Make sure to wear comfortable, loose fitting or stretchy clothing as you will remain fully clothed for the duration of the session, unlike many other massage techniques. Using firm but gentle touch, Maya tailors the sequence and pressure to the needs and medical history of her clients. You will begin in a reclined position, while Maya provides pressure along the Sen (nadi or meridian energy lines of the body) in a sequence designed to work with each muscle group, improve circulation and range of motion, and reduce levels of stress and inflammation throughout the body. Thai also involves movement of the limbs to stretch joints and gently massage key areas of the body according to traditional Thai medical theory. After an hour of body work, Maya completes the session with a sound bath to support integration of the massage and encourage harmony, health and wellbeing.
