Understanding Thermography

Modern thermologists utilize medical thermography techniques with digital cameras that record infrared radiation emitted by the human body, converting these readings into temperature displays on a computer screen. Through thermographic imaging, thermologists can identify areas of heat and cold in comparison to the opposite side of the body. Regions with reduced blood flow register lower temperatures, while areas with increased blood flow appear warmer. Breast thermography is particularly valuable, as it can detect breast tumors and other tumors through a process called Angiogenesis, which involves the formation of new blood vessels that supply nutrients to a tumor. This asymmetric increase in blood flow results in elevated temperatures that can be detected using medical thermal cameras. Often, this blood supply expands over time as a tumor develops, making it crucial for baseline studies to help identify tumors at the earliest possible stage.

Thermography's Range of Uses

Breast thermography is a versatile tool, offering insights into various physiological aspects beyond just breast health. Utilizing medical thermography techniques, it measures skin surface temperature and can assist in detecting and monitoring: Breast health by establishing a baseline and identifying any temperature changes over time; breast cancer by playing a supporting role in the detection process, often used alongside other diagnostic procedures; thyroid pathology by providing supportive information regarding thyroid health; cerebrovascular health by highlighting potential issues related to blood flow in the brain; nerve pathology where abnormalities related to nerve function might be suggested through thermographic imaging; inflammation by identifying areas of heat that may indicate sites of inflammation in the body; infection, as temperature patterns may help reveal areas of potential infection; fibrocystic breast disease, allowing for monitoring of changes over time; vascular disease, which might be assessed for signs related to vascular health; and lymphatic stagnation, potentially identifying congestion within the lymphatic system. Additionally, alterations in skin surface temperature can be monitored and used to inform further investigations.

It’s important to note that while breast thermography provides valuable adjunctive data, it is not a standalone diagnostic tool for these conditions. Its strength lies in complementing other tests and procedures as part of a holistic health assessment. Always consult your healthcare provider for comprehensive examinations and interpretations of your thermography results.

FDA-Approved Thermography Uses

Breast cancer screening, thyroid pathology, cerebrovascular screening, peripheral vascular disorders, and neuromuscular conditions can all benefit from medical thermography. In a clinical setting, breast thermography and thermographic imaging can aid doctors in detecting various systemic conditions, infections, inflammation, toxicity, dysfunction of the lymphatic system, testicular disorders, and any disease that may increase or decrease skin surface temperatures.
